How EMDR is The Key to Treating Trauma


<p>EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. At first glance this may seem like an unorthodox approach to mental health treatments, however, many studies show positive results from this form of treatment. To put it simply, during EMDR therapy, a patient relives traumatic memories in small doses while a therapist directs their eye movements. The brain does not process traumatic memories the same way it processes all other memories. These traumatic events are integrated into the brain in a splintered manner.</p> <p>EMDR is believed to be so beneficial because reliving a traumatic event is supposedly easier to do when your attention is constantly being redirected. This distraction also leads to incomplete retrieval of the full traumatic memory. The traumatic memory is then restored into the brain as a blurry memory making it less vivid and difficult to recall in the future. Think of this treatment as a way of removing the mental and emotional blockages that prevent our minds from automatically healing emotional wounds caused by trauma.</p> <p>PTSD and other depressive or mental health conditions are statistically more likely to develop in individuals who experience the sudden and/or violent loss of a loved one. The sudden loss of a loved one, no matter how it occurs, is an incredibly traumatic event. Many will not initially believe the process of grief and bereavement to be one of a traumatic manner, which in turn will generally lead those suffering away from treatments from psychotherapists or EMDR professionals. However, the effects of traumatic grief can result in many differing mental health struggles that may not have been previously present in the individual.</p> <p>Seeking professional mental health treatment in a psychotherapist is an incredible way to step in the direction of healing from a traumatic event and the addition of EMDR therapy can really move individuals into a place of peace and happiness again after experiencing a trauma. Developing a strong and comfortable relationship with a therapist is a critical step in maximizing the benefits of talk therapy. The road toward being able to form a strong bond with a mental health professional can seem scary to those about to embark on&nbsp;that journey, but being able to find a psychotherapist whom you connect with makes all the difference.</p>
