Wilmington Mental Health provides evidence-based, person-centered treatment primarily to residents of
Southeastern North Carolina. Our mission is to ease the process that allows individuals, couples,
and families to receive mental health, substance use disorder, psychiatry, and primary care
treatment. We are familiar with the stigma that is associated with mental health and the way mental
illness is perceived in society as a sign of weakness or madness. Quite the reverse, we have found
that our patients possess high levels of intelligence, resilience, and critical thinking, which
allowed them to make the smart decision of seeking help before it was too late. We see if as if they
needed assistance with finding alternative solutions to what they are dealing with the same way
people find help in a real estate agent when they are trying to buy a house. Moreover, the myth that
holds when it comes to substance dependence is that only people who want to change can achieve and
maintain sobriety from drugs and alcohol; our data does not support this. Many people do come to us
because their friends, family members, employers, or the legal system has somehow ‘coerced’ them to
seek help and this initial extrinsic motivation becomes essential in their developing a desire to do
things differently. However, we see assisted and independent transformation during treatment. We
witness transformation when therapy helps our patients see that changing their present directly
impacts their future.
We see therapy as a tool you can use to help you regain control and stability in your life, but your
capacity to cope with everyday life stressors and challenges is a collective approach. Your overall
wellness depends on the healthy interaction between your mind, body, and the environment. Coping
effectively with life and creating satisfying relationships while ignoring your physical needs or
the way your surrounding support your well-being is, in simple terms, insufficient. Hence our
integration model incorporates behavioral health and primary care services in one single place –
licensed therapists and mid-level psychiatrists and family medicine providers working as a team.
